On April 3, 1999, in Hartford City, Indiana, Megan asked her father if she could walk a couple blocks to Sonny’s Diner to visit a friend. It was a trip she’d made many times before. But when she arrived, her friend wasn’t there. Megan took a detour behind the restaurant and stopped to pick dandelions—unaware that a predator was watching.

That predator was Donald Grenier, a 44-year-old man with a history of indecent exposure and a distinctive feature—he only had one arm. Grenier abducted Megan, threw her into his maroon Chevy van with covered windows, and subjected her to repeated SA over the course of the next 24 hours. He hog-tied her with bungee cords, wrapped her in duct tape, and tried to silence her. But he underestimated Megan’s will to survive.

Despite being terrified, Megan tried everything to convince Grenier to release her. She offered him her Easter money. She told him it was her birthday. When that didn’t work, she told him she had AIDS—a bold and strategic lie meant to frighten him into letting her go. Still, he kept her tied up in the van, parked in the garage of his mother’s house in Marion, Indiana.

Back in Hartford City, her family was in full panic mode. Police and volunteers launched a massive search. Flyers, news coverage, and public pleas for help dominated East Central Indiana. But Megan wasn’t waiting to be saved.

On Easter Sunday, Grenier left her alone in the van—likely to avoid alerting his mother. Megan seized the moment. In a stunning act of courage, she wriggled out of her restraints and escaped the van. Running from house to house, she eventually found help at the home of Edwin Atkins, a local factory worker. He saw the duct tape marks on her body and immediately called police.

Megan gave a detailed description of Grenier, his van, and her escape route. That led police directly to Grenier’s home. There, they found the van, bungee cords, and duct tape—all matching Megan’s account. Grenier was arrested on the spot.

At trial, Megan testified bravely, even bringing a piece of duct tape from the van as evidence—just in case no one believed her. The jury took less than 90 minutes to convict Grenier. He was sentenced to 128 years in prison, with his earliest possible release in 2058, when he’ll be 103.

This isn’t just another kidnapping case—it’s a chilling true crime story of abduction, survival, and unbelievable bravery. Megan Musgrave didn’t just survive—she escaped, spoke out, and put her kidnapper behind bars.

Today, Megan hosts her own true crime podcast, Gruesome, where she shares her story on her own terms. Her courage continues to inspire, proving that even in the darkest circumstances, the will to survive can prevail.
