The Paulson Family Murders of Allendale, Michigan | Maris Karklins

16 years before Seth Privacky murdered his family and April Boss in Muskegon, Michigan, the Paulson family was living quietly in nearby Allendale, Michigan. Bob Paulson and his wife Mary Jane had three beautiful daughters: Cindi, Carla, and Casey. All three girls were good students and very well-liked by their peers. There is no question that they would have gone on to live full lives had Maris Karklins not walked into their Allendale home on March 13, 1982, and killed the entire Paulson family.

The tragic story of the Paulson family rocked the small community of Allendale, Michigan, in March 1982. Bob and Mary Jane Paulson, along with their three daughters—Cynthia, Carla, and Casey—were living a peaceful life when their world was shattered in a senseless act of violence. On the afternoon of March 13, Bob had a seemingly ordinary phone call with a business associate, William Breen, but just minutes later, the family’s farmhouse was engulfed in smoke, and a local farmer discovered their lifeless bodies.

Investigators determined that all five members of the Paulson family had been shot execution-style with a .22 caliber weapon before their home was set on fire. The details were chilling: the victims showed no signs of being tied up, and the precise gunshot wounds indicated a calculated attack. Despite limited evidence due to the fire, police gathered witness statements, including a sighting of a suspicious car near the property that morning.

The case took months to solve, leaving the community in fear. Suspicion turned to Maris Karklins, a former co-worker of Mary Jane Paulson. Karklins had a history of bizarre behavior and an intense hatred for Mary Jane. When police questioned him again after he shot his own mother, Karklins confessed to the Paulson murders, describing in graphic detail how he carried out the killings, claiming to be on a divine mission.

Karklins was convicted in 1983 and sentenced to life in prison for the murders of the Paulson family and his mother. The case left an indelible mark on Allendale, serving as a haunting reminder of the horrors one disturbed individual can unleash. Today, Karklins remains behind bars, while the memory of the Paulsons lives on in the hearts of those who loved them.
